The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 138.85 (0.94 per cent) to 14,700.95. The broad-based S&P 500 fell 14.87 (0.93 per cent) to 1,582.70, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index sank 29.66 (0.89 per cent) to 3,299.13. Wednesday's losses came after the ADP job report showed April job growth fell to the slowest level in seven months.

After three straight weeks of gains, the Australian sharemarket has kicked off the new trading week in the red. The All Ordinaries index (XAO) fell by 0.4 pct or 15.4 pts to 4287.6. The industrial and utility sectors managed to rise slightly but all other regions of the market ended the day in the red.

The Australian sharemarket certainly could not put 'consistency' down on its resume as one of its strong points. Over the past 20 business days, local shares have improved exactly half of the time and have gained by an uninspiring 2.5 pct over the past three months.

The Australian sharemarket unfortunately fell for the third straight day today with the All Ordinaries index (XAO) down 0.7 pct or 29.4 pts to 4204.2. Although today was not an ideal session, keep in mind that shares in the U.S fell by over 2 pct while the European markets fell by as much as 3.5 pct.

From Morrison Securities Pty. Ltd U.S. stocks rose Monday, helped by late-session reports that detailed some of the options for Europe's bailout fund. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished with a gain of 85.15 points, or 0.71%, to 12068.39, after falling by more than 100 points midsession. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index added 7.89 points, or 0.63%, to 1261.12. The modest gains were enough to move the broad market measure back into the black for 2011, now up 0.28% year to date...
