The Australian sharemarket has followed US and European markets into negative territory today - putting an end to a two-session rally. The All Ords (XAO) has closed near the day's lows, losing 0.7 percent to 5,399. While the ASX 200 (XJO) fell 0.8 percent to 5,422.

A 2 day break at the weekend has done little to dent the ambition of local sellers. Having lost almost 1.8 per cent last week, the ASX 200 opened flat although within the first half of the session the index had fallen by 20 points. Thereafter the Index plumbed new lows to be down by about 30 points at the worst levels of the morning.

Sellers have been mobilised from the outset in today's session and have encountered little resistance from buyers along the way in early trade. The fall on Wall Street overnight has been too difficult to look through for local investors. The US Fed will be undeterred in relation to tapering despite the weak reading for US jobs growth according to comments made by the President of the Atlanta Fed overnight.

The Fed meeting next week looms as the last market catalyst for 2013. The better economic news from the US has improved the odds, in the markets eyes at least, that the US central bank will taper Q.E this year. The Australian sharemarket is improving for the fourth straight day. The All Ordinaries Index (XAO) is up 0.6 per cent, taking the gains this week to around 3.25 per cent. If the gains extend a little further this afternoon, this will end up being the best week since December 2011.

Gold continued to lost its luster as prices of spot gold futures for June delivery dropped 0.7 per cent and closed on Thursday at $1.386.90 an ounce on the Comex in New York. It is the sixth consecutive prices that the price went down, and the longest slump for the precious metal once considered a safe haven.
