China's largest e-commerce company Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is planning to go public in the US after it failed to reach an agreement with the Hong Kong stock exchange in regard to a listing there.

Stiffer competition is expected in Australia's stock market with the offer by the revitalised National Stock Exchange of Australia (NSX) to reduce broker application fees to zero. The new policy took effect on Jan 1, 2012, the same week that the NSX added 30 firms to its listing.

The rules on foreign ownership in ASX Ltd, according to Australian Financial Services Minister Bill Shorten, did not drop Singapore Exchange Ltd’s bid and they do not need any correction. This after the government decided to uphold a tax office ruling that gains from asset sales by private equity firms.
Australia grants Chi-X license

The Australian government on Wednesday granted Chi-X the license to operate an alternative securities exchange in Australia, effectively ending the 20-year monopoly of the ASX Group Ltd. Chi-X is owned by Nomura.

US retail sales rose 0.3pct in January with non-auto sales also up 0.3pct. Economists had tipped a 0.6pct lift in sales and 0.5pct increase in non-auto sales.
