    Local shares continued to lose ground over the course of Tuesday afternoon. The four preceding sessions saw the ASX 200 rise by 290 points or 5.5%. Local participants shrugged off the positive tone that featured in US and European trade overnight, to the extent that the market ended at the lows of the day.

    The Australian share market rose convincingly today, helped out by strong gains from our mining players and a positive offshore lead. The All Ordinaries Index (XAO) closed off the highs of the day, but managed to rise 36.2 points or 0.7 per cent by close to 5387.2.

    The Australian sharemarket is higher at lunch for the sixth consecutive trading day and for the 11th time in 12 sessions. The All Ordinaries Index (XAO) is up 0.6 per cent, with the miners the start performers. The last time the XAO improved from Monday through to Friday was 14 months ago. Largely positive economic news in the U.S. (relating to jobs and manufacturing) helped lift global markets overnight.

    After a volatile night on the US markets our market has followed suit today. The Dow Jones index traded over a range of around 140 points overnight and the ASX has now traded over a 40 point range so far today. After a strong start, where the All Ordinaries Index (XAO) up over 30points, the market has now moved into the red. The market fall was largely because of the sell out in the banks as rumors start to percolate in the markets of a possible bank deposit insurance levy.

    On the 28th of February, International Airlines Group informed that it reported a net loss worth €943 million after battling through restructuring charges from its Spanish division Iberia.
