The last week of July was a big week for the U.S. stock market as 22 companies went public. The share launches was led by Synchrony Financial (NYSE: SYF), which is expected to raise $3.1 billion, making it the largest initial public offering (IPO) in 2014.

Despite being sold off this morning for the first time since Wednesday last week, local shares have crept into positive territory. The crash of yet another Malaysian passenger plane has kept global markets on edge, pushing the price of gold and oil higher, while the All Ordinaries Index (XAO) is up by 0.1 per cent.

After three straight sessions of losses, the Australian sharemarket has managed to improve by 0.7 per cent. The All Ordinaries Index (XAO) was up by 0.14 per cent at its worst and 0.83 per cent higher at its best before settling 0.68 per cent firmer by the close.
