The local sharemarket continued its downward slide this afternoon, closing firmly in the red. The All Ordinaries Index (XAO) lost 0.32 per cent or 17pts to 5,475, while the S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.29 per cent or 16 pts to 5,501. The market was weighed down by falls in the mining and financial sectors. Volumes saw 1.9 billion shares exchanged worth $5.3 billion. 386 stocks ended higher, 571 closed lower and 321 were unchanged.

US equities remained choppy as investors juggled various factors, including a raft of key earnings. JP Morgan, Citigroup and Wells Fargo reported, with the dominant theme a pick-up in trading revenue. Earnings were mixed and didn't really give a good picture of what to expect from Q3 earnings. Earnings that enjoyed the biggest positive reaction were Citigroup and Intel. Intel reported after-market and impressed, resulting in a 2.8% rise in its shares.

European shares recovered in late trade on Tuesday, after hitting an eight-month low earlier in the session. The better earnings results out of the US and rally in US equities prompted the turnaround. Earlier concerns about euro zone growth weighed on markets. The German ZEW monthly survey of economic sentiment fell for a 10th straight month to minus 3.6, the weakest result in almost two years. Local shares posted one of their better gains of the year today with the All Ordinaries Index (XAO) rising by 1 per cent or 50.9pts to 5204. Despite the improvement, the market's downtrend remains firmly in place with losses of over 8 per cent recorded since the start of September. The next support level for the ASX 200 is around 5070.0.

US shares slumped overnight in thin holiday trade. The Dow Jones fell by 1.4 per cent while the broader S&P500 dropped by 1.7 per cent. Investors are holding their breath for a barrage of profit results from some of America's biggest banks this week. Citigroup, JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo are all scheduled to issue third quarter results tonight.

European shares rose on Monday. Shares in Citigroup rose after releasing solid earnings figures. And fears about the health of the Portuguese banking system continued to ease. The FTSEurofirst 300 index rose by 0.8% with the German Dax higher by 1.2% while the UK FTSE gained 0.8%. Australia´s major miners were higher in London trade with shares in BHP Billiton up by 1.6% while Rio Tinto lifted by 1.2%.

Surprise earnings from Citigroup have certainly managed to snap the S&P out of its downward trend. The S&P registered its worst week since January last week, but snapped back on Citi earnings and better-than-expected retails sale.

The All Ordinaries Index (XAO) slumped 1.29 per cent; finishing below 5400 points for the first time in two weeks and recording its biggest daily tumble in a month. Investors are likely to remain a little quiet this week due to the shortened Easter trading week.

In US economic data, the economy grew at a 2.6% annualised pace in the December quarter, up from the 2.4% prior estimate and just short of forecasts. New claims for unemployment insurance fell by 10,000 to 311,000 in the latest week, well below forecasts centred near 325,000. But the pending home sales index eased 0.8% in February. Economists had tipped a flat result.

While yesterday's trade was dominated by the prospect of stimulus measures from the ECB and PBoC, today's trade looks like it will concentrate on a 'neutral' RBA. Although most describe the RBA as neutral, comments from Governor Glenn Stevens are taking the RBA right to the edge between neutral and hawkish.
