The Toronto International Film Festival officially announced the list of films to be shown in its 39th edition on Tuesday, July 22. The list includes some of the biggest names in Hollywood as well as in Canada. Here are five major films from Canada and the United States.
Maps to the Stars (Canada/Germany)
Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg's movie made a sensation at the Cannes earlier in 2014. Julianne Moore won the Best Actress award at the festival for her portrayal of an ageing actress Havana Segrand. This is the first time Cronenberg shot in the U.S. The movie deals with two former child stars.
Time Out of Mind (U.S.A)
Oren Moverman's "Time Out of Mind," which stars Richard Gere as a homeless man for the first time in his career, will have its release at the festival. Gere, known for his polished urban look both on and off the screen, incited curiosity as he chose to play a homeless man, which promises to be a deglamourised character.
Daniel Barnz's "Cake," starring Jennifer Aniston, is a "Special Presentation" at the festival. "Cake" is about a woman who attends a chronic-pain support group. The character played by Aniston starts investigating the death of a group member. During the investigation process, she develops a relation with the husband of the deceased woman.
Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet (Canada/France/Lebanon/Qatar/U.S.A)
This animation movie is inspired by Kahlil Gibran's famous book. There were 10 directors from around the world who made this film with individual "chapters" directed by them. Roger Allers is the principal director of the film which has voices from legendary actors like Liam Neeson and Salma Hayek.
The Judge (U.S.A)
This comedy-drama is directed by David Dobkin who earlier made the action-comedy "Shanghai Knights" in 2003. The movie stars Robert Downey, Jr. who plays lawyer Henry Palmer. Palmer returns to his hometown only to find that his father has been accused of murder. Now, he has to defend his father against a prosecutor who wants his father to be punished.
