St. Louis Rams welcome the first openly gay player in the National Football league after drafting Michael Sam on to their roster. When Sam was drafted, he immediately kissed boyfriend Vito Cammisano on the lips in front of the camera for the whole world to see.

Cammisano shared a picture on Twitter, which Sam later on retweeted.

Sam used to play for the University of Missouri, the reported. He was named both All-American and Southern Eastern Conference (SEC) Defensive player of the year. According to the Web site, Sam came out in February. Sam revealed that he had no idea that a lot of people already knew what his sexual preference is, and he was afraid that someone would squeal it. He said that reason why he decided to divulge his real identity is because he "wants to own his truth."

"No one should tell my story but me," Sam said.

Sam further revealed that he felt a little apprehensive about the entire "coming out" thing because no one had has done such a courageous act before. "I understand how big this is."

"It's a big deal."

No matter how difficult or challenging his situation may be, Sam has his mind set and focused on getting a career in the National Football League (NFL).

Being drafted meant a lot for the 24-year-old American football defensive end. Right after he was drafted, he tweeted:

President Barack Obama, on the other hand, was happy that Sam will get the chance to live his dream. Obama congratulated Sam in a statement released by the White House as reported by

"The President congratulates Michael Sam, the Rams, and the NFL for taking an important step forward in our Nation's journey," Obama said in the statement.

"From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove every day that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are," Obama added.

Sam was selected by the Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
