Good news for Samsung Galaxy S3 users from Sprint as the carrier rolls out the Android 4.4 Kitkat OS update for the handset starting today.
Sprint posted an update on its support page announcing that its Samsung Galaxy S3 will begin receiving the 4.4 version of Android's Kitkat starting on May 1. The latest update will bump the Galaxy S3's software version of L710VPUCND8. Unfortunately, that was the only information that known about the update as Sprint's change log only says "Android 4.4 KitKat update."
Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 users may check if their respective handsets are being updated to the latest mobile software. To check, go to Settings > More > System Update > Update Samsung Software > Check Now. Users can also download the firmware at this link. Download the file and no custom ROM and rooting needed.
Back in February, Sprint was the first carrier to update its Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 smartphones to the latest 4.4.2 version of Android OS. Thus, it was not surprising that the network will also be the first to update the Galaxy S3 handset.
Moreover, GottaBeMobile reported that Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3's Android 4.4 Kitkat update was seen in two leaks early this week. First, the Android OS update was spotted in Sprint's website on a User Agent Profile. The listing was for Sprint's Galaxy S3's model SPH-L710 and runs with the 4.4.2 version of the Kitkat OS. Furthermore, the Android 4.4 kernel source of the Sprint Galaxy S3 was also seen in an OpenSource web site for developers.
These leaks hinted the release of the OS update to Samsung's most popular handset. Meanwhile, other US networks have not revealed their plans yet with their respective Samsung Galaxy S3 handsets and have not confirmed whether their subscribers will receive the aforementioned version of the mobile software.
