The Sony Xperia Z2 was released in the first quarter of 2014, while the brand new OnePlus One handset was launched recently. The OnePlus One, also known as the "flagship killer" boasts some of the killer specifications and features that will give strong competition to the existing pack of high-end phones like the Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2, LG G3 and HTC One (M8).

Although currently available in European markets, the expected release date of the OnePlus One handset in other parts of the world is Q3 of 2014. Display, Exterior and Size

The Sony Xperia Z2 features a 5.2 inches IPS LCD display, with a superior resolution of 1,080 x 1,920 pixels. Whereas the OnePlus One features a whopping 5.5 inches IPS LCD display, with the same screen resolution as the Xperia Z2. The pixel density of the Xperia Z2 is 424 ppi, which is slightly higher than the 401 ppi of OnePlus One.

The unique selling point of the OnePlus One is the magnesium exterior. Also the rear panel is alterable with choices like bamboo, kevlar, and denim. The flagship from Sony is made of both Triluminos display technology and Sony's proprietary X-Reality engine from BRAVIA TV line. This combination provides the Xperia Z2 with better colour and image reproduction. In addition, the Xperia Z2 features water and dust resistant (IP67 certified) exterior, while the OnePlus One doesn't.

The thickness and the weight of Sony Xperia Z2 are 0.32 inches and 163 g respectively.  The OnePlus One, on the other hand, comes with a thickness of 0.35 inches and a weight of 162 g.

Hardware and Software

Both the handsets are powered by the same quad-core (Qualcomm Snapdragon 801) Krait 400 processor. While the Xperia Z2 is clocked at 2.5 GHz, the OnePlus One settles for 2.3 GHz. Also, both the phones house a whopping 3 GB of RAM. The Xperia Z2 runs on Android v4.4.2 KitKat OS, whereas the OnePlus One runs on the unique combination of Android v4.4 KitKat OS with CyanogenMod 11S UI.


The Xperia Z2 sports a killer 20.7 MP rear-facing camera with LED flash and a 2.2 MP front-facing camera, while the OnePlus One features a relatively lower 13 MP rear-facing camera with Dual LED flash and a surprisingly good 5 MP front-facing camera. In addition, both OnePlus One and Xperia Z2 can shoot 4K (3,840 x 2,160) videos.


The Sony Xperia Z2 comes with 16 GB of internal storage, whereas the OnePlus One comes with 16 GB or 64 GB of internal storage. In addition, the Xperia Z2 supports microSD card for expansion up to 128 GB, while the OnePlus One doesn't.


The device from Sony houses a solid non-removable 3200 mAh battery unit, while the OnePlus One features a similar non-removable 3100 mAh battery unit. The Xperia Z2 can provide up to 19 hours of talk-time and 740 hours of stand-by time, while the battery capacity details of OnePlus One is still not available.


The Sony Xperia Z2 comes in black, white, and purple shades, whereas the OnePlus One comes in silk white and sandstone black.

The Sony Xperia Z2 is priced at AU$699.95 in Australia. Notably, this is a reduction from the earlier price of AU$849.95. The 16 GB variant of OnePlus One is priced at US$299 (roughly translates to AU$317), while the 64 GB variant can be purchased US$349 (roughly translates to AU$371).
