Samsung Electronics will hold an app challenge worldwide for Gear 2 developers to support the applications for the wearable market.
The event will be third of the first "Samsung Smart App Challenges" of 2014 and part of the plan to continue innovating the wearables department.
Samsung unveiled Gear 2 in February during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. During the event, the company also distributed a Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers of Gear 2 apps, free of charge. Developers can apply for the challenge by registering apps via Samsung's SDK starting May 8. The challenge prize is more than $1.25 million with $100,000 prize for the first placer.
According to President Won-Pyo of Samsung Electronics Media Solution Center, this challenge commences the firm's plan to enhance the app ecosystem for Gear 2.
Samsung is moving forward in playing its part in the field of wearables by offering outstanding SDKs to developers. Also, the South Korea-based electronics company seeks to host global events such as the Samsung Gear Hackathon and Developer Day so that there will be better understanding for developers on Samsung Gear 2 SDK.
The Developer Day and Samsung Gear Hackathon events already have schedules with the following countries:
Singapore: Developer Day - April 5
Malaysia: Developer Day - Apr 15
Brazil: Developer Day and Hackathon - May 9-10
Korea: Hackathon - May 24-25
U.S.: Dev Lab During Tizen Developer Conference Hilton, Union Square, San Francisco, CA - June 2-4
Stay tuned as the events will be set in more countries. You can sign up for the event to be held in your country on the Samsung Wearables site.
Compared to the first smartwatch Samsung has produced, Galaxy Gear, Gear 2 is more stylish as it does look less "techy." It comes in different colors that make it generally more appealing. It has an IR channel, which can be used to change TV channels and a heart monitor that can measure the user's pulse when he works out. These features are not found in Gear. While Gear 2 costs $299, its cheaper version Gear 2 Neo is priced at $199, but less the camera.
