The LG G3 was released on May 27, 2014. Packed with incredible features and great camera unit, this phone is making waves across the globe. The Samsung Galaxy S5 Active, on the other hand, is expected to be launched in the press conference scheduled by Samsung on June 12, 2014. The Galaxy S5 Active is touted to be the rugged version of the recently released flagship smartphone the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Display, Design, Exterior and Size

The LG G3 has a 5.5 inches IPS LCD display, with a superior screen resolution of 1,440 x 2,560 pixels. Whereas the Galaxy S5 Active is expected to come with a relatively smaller 5.1 inches Super AMOLED display, with 1,080 x 1,920 pixels screen resolution. The Galaxy S5 Active is capable of supporting up to 432 ppi of pixel density, which is much lower than the 534 ppi of the latest LG G3.

The thickness and the weight of LG G3 are 0.35 inches and 149 g respectively.  The Galaxy S5 Active, on the other hand, is expected to come with the same thickness of 0.35 inches and a weight of 170 g.

Hardware and Software

The LG G3 is powered by a quad-core Krait 400 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 801) processor, clocked at 2.5 GHz and it comes with a 2 GB of RAM (if opted for 16 GB of storage) and a 3 GB of RAM (If opted for 32 GB of storage). The Galaxy S5 Active will also be powered by the same processor like the LG G3, with 2 GB of RAM.

Both the handsets run on the latest Android v4.4.2 KitKat OS. However, the LG G3 uses LG's Optimus UI on top of Android OS and the Samsung device uses TouchWiz UI.


The LG G3 sports a 13 MP rear-facing camera with dual-LED (dual tone) flash and a 2.1 MP front-facing camera. The Galaxy S5 Active, on the other hand, features a whopping 16 MP rear-facing camera but with regular LED Flash and a 2 MP front-facing camera.

Both the Galaxy S5 Active and the LG G3 can shoot 4K (3,840 x 2,160) videos. The incredible camera features of LG G3 include 'Laser Autofocus Sensor' and 'Selfie' Mode. LG claims that the laser autofocus sensor functionality is very quick as it takes only 0.276 seconds to focus. The LG G3 comes with 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage, while the Galaxy S5 Active is expected to come with 16 GB of internal storage. In addition, both the phones support microSD slot for expansion up to 128 GB.


The LG G3 houses a solid 3000 mAh battery, whereas the Galaxy S5 Active is expected to house a relatively lesser 2800 mAh battery unit. The LG G3 has a user-replaceable battery unit, while the Galaxy S5 Active doesn't. In addition, the G3 offers built-in wireless charging facility.


Both the phones support micro-sim.


The LG G3 comes in five shades gold, white, black, blue, and red; the blue and red shades are not widely available. The Galaxy S5 Active will come in 'camo green,' 'titanium grey' and 'ruby red' shades.


The LG G3 is priced at AU$799.95 in Australia. It is worth noting that, interested buyers can pre-order LG G3 from Mobicity in Australia. The Australian version of LG G3 is LG-D855 model that comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. Hence the 3 GB variant of LG G3 is not available in Australia, at this point in time.

According to PC Advisor, AT&T has confirmed a Camo Green version of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active specific to the U.S. market. The handset is priced at US$714.99 that roughly translates to AU$771.49.
