In view of the National Ice Cream Day on the third Sunday of July, an analyst from USA-based online food ordering company GrubHub revealed the most ordered flavors and toppings by Americans.

According to an article from BostInno, the GrubHub analyst took data from the most ordered ice cream flavours in the country from June 20, 2013 to June 19, 2014. The year-long study focused on the most often ordered ice cream flavours, most popular ice cream toppings, and some fun facts pertaining to the ice cream eating habits among various people around the United States.

The study found out that vanilla is most ordered ice cream flavour among Americans which comprised almost 17 per cent of the orders. While green tea and chocolate flavour came in close second and third spot with almost 15 per cent of the orders made for each of the two flavors.

Far below the list are the coconut and strawberry flavours in the fourth and fifth spot with just around 5 per cent of the orders at GrubHub indicating these flavours.  The flavours mango, cookie dough, and red bean occupied the sixth, seventh, and eight spots respectively with all three flavours comprising around 4 per cent of the orders.

Cookies and cream flavour got 3 per cent of the orders made and landed in the ninth spot. Rounding up the top 10 spot is the Mint Chocolate Chip flavour with more than one per cent of the Americans ordering this flavor.

In addition, the study revealed that almost half (48 per cent) of the orders done during the study period had whipped cream for the toppings with the Americans ordering these toppings together with their favourite ice cream flavours.

Almost one third (33 per cent) of the orders made during the study period had hot fudge on the ice cream toppings while almost 29 per cent of the ice cream orders  were topped with chocolate syrup. Completing the top five toppings is the cherry which comprised almost 21 per cent of the ice cream  orders.

Americans' most ordered toppings occupying the sixth to tenth spot are caramel with over 14 per cent; strawberry with almost 11 per cent; walnut with almost eight per cent; oreo with over seven per cent; and banana with almost six per cent.

Ice cream ranks third from the list of America's most ordered cold foods delivery after shakes and smoothies. In view of the large economical contribution of ice cream to the country, former US President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the month of July as National Ice Cream Month in 1984.

According to International Dairy Foods Association (IFDA), the ice cream industry in the United States generated a total of $10 billion revenue for the year 2010. Sales from the take home represented the largest portion with $6.8 billion (67.7 per cent) of the ice cream sales coming from it.

From US President Barack Obama to the ordinary people on the street, ice cream is enjoyed not just in the United States but also in other countries all over the world.
