When Lorde won Best Rock Video for “Royals” at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, her BFF Taylor Swift was beside herself with joy. Not everyone is rejoicing with the 17-year-old Kiwi, though.

Lorde has just made history as the first female solo artist to win the category at the VMAs. It’s a feat worth celebrating, but some people question how she got the moonman.

Twitter is abound of VMA viewers who thought Lorde shouldn’t have won the award. It’s not because “Royals” isn’t popular enough to garner enough winning votes (it is), but because it shouldn’t even have been nominated.

According to the detractors, the chart-topper isn’t a rock song, so it had no business being put in the same category as Arctic Monkeys’ “Do I Wanna Know?”, The Black Keys’ “Fever,” Imagine Dragons’ “Demons” and Linkin Park’s “Until It’s Gone.”
