iPhone 6 vs. iPhone 5s: New Specs Comparison, Release And More

By @peevesky on

Apple's iPhone series is one of the company's most successful products. With iPhone 5s posting excellent sales in the past quarter, the market is keen in finding out what the tech giant has in store for the new year.

According to recent reports, Apple will be roling out its iPhone 6 later in 2014. While it is not clear when it would be, either June or September, new specs comparison and predictions show that Apple intends to change the standards for its flagship series. What does iPhone 6 have to offer compared to iPhone 5s?

One of the most striking leads about the iPhone 6 is sapphire screen. Reports about the sapphire screen started surfacing then CNBC reported about Apple striking a deal with GT Advanced technologies for $578 million. The company specializes in the production of sapphire substrate.

While Apple has been using sapphire for the lens cover of iPhone and touch ID, the new materials will be used for screen cover of the entire phone. Sapphire is recognized as the second-hardest material next to diamond.

According to TIME, It has earned attention because of its supposed scratch-resistant features. But they are 10 times more expensive compared to Gorilla Glass. This has prevented sapphire material from reaching smartphone screens until now.

While costs can lower over time, GT Advanced technologies, Apple's new partner,

may have the a good solution according to MIT Technology Review in March 2013.

"An alternative to using pure sapphire is to laminate an ultrathin layer of sapphire with another, cheaper transparent material, maintaining much of the performance advantage of sapphire at a cost comparable to that of the glass typical in mobile-phone displays."

"For this purpose, GT Advanced Technologies, based in Nashua, New Hampshire, is developing a method for making sapphire sheets thinner than a human hair-much thinner than the nearly millimeter-thick glass used now on mobile phones."

The screen alone of the iPhone 6 will make it a few times better than what is found on iPhone 5s. Other improved specs include a 10MP camera featuring f/1.8 aperture according to design and trend.

Also, the improvements will not stop here. According to a note by Maclife, Apple will be using a resin filter for iPhone 6. This will replace the hybrid filter of iPhone series. The note also emphasized that the filters from JSR, a Japanese manufacturer, offer a thinner and lighter design.

The new filter system will provide cleaner images. The new resin material can reduce color shifts in cameras because of its CMOS features. While these are just leads, they are worth-looking into as the sapphire screens were previously leads as well. Recently, production of sapphire screens for 100-200 million units of 5-inch iPhones has been reported by 9to5Mac

Other reports claimed the same thing about two possible screen sizes and resolution, KDB Daewoo Securities added a peculiar prediction. Instead of the iOS 8, the company said the next iPhone will run on iOS 7.2.

People will have to wait for further announcements from Apple to know the final details. iPhone 5s comes with LED-backlit IPS LCD, capacitive touchscreen, 16 M colors, 640 x 1136 pixels, including 4.0 inches (~326 ppi pixel density). It runs on Apple A7, dual-core 1.3 GHz Cyclone (ARM v8-based) and PowerVR G6430 (quad-core graphics). The screen features Corning Gorilla Glass and oleophobic coating.
