JK Rowling has written a letter as Albus Dumbledore to massacre survivor Cassidy Stay. The “Harry Potter” author responded to the 15-year-old U.S. girl who lost her entire family in a senseless shooting by an ex-uncle.
On July 9, tragedy has befallen the Stay family in Texas after Ronald Haskell shot the parents, Katie and Stephen Stay, and all five of their children. Cassidy, the eldest child, survived by playing dead.
Her fingers deflected the bullet that would have hit her head. As a result, the bullet only grazed her skull. She was left with a skull fracture and had lost part of her finger.
She called emergency after the shooter left, prompting the police to apprehend Haskell and prevent him from going to her grandparents’ home.
Haskell, 33, is the ex-husband of Katie’s sister, Melanie. He went to the Stays’ residence to find his ex-wife.
Cassidy was taken to the Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, and was released two days later in good condition.
On July 12, she and her grandfather, Roger Lyon, attended a memorial service at the local elementary school, where she thanked the community for helping her.
In her speech, she quoted Dumbledore from “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” saying that her family is now in a better place.
“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times. If one only remembers to turn on the light,” she said.
“I know that my mum, dad, Bryan, Emily, Becca and Zach are in a much better place and that I’ll be able to see them again one day.”
Her tragic story and bravery made national attention. After delivering her remarkable speech, her supporters have created a Facebook page in a bid to set up a meeting between Cassidy and Rowling.
Rowling responded by writing Cassidy a personal, handwritten letter in the voice of Dumbledore, as well as sending “Harry Potter” stuff.
“This afternoon, I talked to a friend of Cassidy’s who confirmed that JK Rowling did, in fact, writer her a personalised letter from ‘Dumbledore’ (hand-written with purple ink),” the message on Facebook reads.
“She also sent a wand, an acceptance letter to Hogwarts with a school supply list, along with the 3rd book with JK’s autograph.”
The message added that the Facebook page’s administrators would still keep the page active until the bestselling author actually meets Cassidy.
