It was an all-American affair on the first day of the knockout stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Half of the field still left in the competition are from the Americas and the inevitable has arrived. The neighbours needed to play against each other on the first day of competition with Brazil edging out Chile and Colombia outclassing Uruguay.

World Cup hosts scored early through David Luiz but was cancelled out by Alexis Sanchez before the half. Neither team was able to take the lead in regulation time and the game went into extra time. Both teams had their fair share of chances but no one was able to find the back of the net. A penalty shootout ensued and two saves by Julio Cesar gave Brazil the advantage they needed to keep the home nation alive to face Colombia in the quarterfinals.
