An evangelical church in New Zealand promotes olive oil as part of its "cure-all" treatment for diseases like tumors and schizophrenia and even relationship issues.
In an event in Auckland on March 30, the evangelical church invited people to come and take the "unique opportunity" for people who needed a "miracle." According to the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, the "holy oil" was blessed at the various biblical miracle sites in Israel.
The church said the olive oil can treat mental illness, tumors, bladder and stomach diseases, strokes, heart conditions and marriage problems. When the New Zealand Herald had asked for evidence, the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) Bishop Victor Silva said the oil itself cannot cure diseases. He explained that it was an act of faith. The people's faith can help in the treatment.
The 8-page newsletter being distributed in the mail claimed the olive oil has helped in treating people with conditions that doctors have failed to cure. According to the newsletter, "the Holy Oil was chosen by God as an instrument of faith to heal the sick."
It further claimed the oil can be used to anoint the sick and make the emotionally depressed better. The oil can also be used on family and loved ones, the office and everything that represents one's challenges in life.
The Church said the "cure-all" oil will not be sold but given for free. The oil will be placed in cross-shaped bottles and will be given to those who will attend the event at the Manukau's Vodafone Events Centre.
Testimonies of being healed by the oil were also included in the newsletter. People claiming to have been cured told their stories. It was not clear where the stories had come from. One church member claimed the oil cured a pancreatic tumor. There was no trace of the tumor on the patient after the doctor's examination.
In small print, the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God's newsletter had the disclaimer: "The UCKG Help Centre does not claim to heal people but believes that God can through the power of faith. Always follow your doctor's instructions."
