Do you know how to properly click the button on your mouse so you can explore a piece of content on the monitor? How about trying to click, click, click properly for around 800,000 to 12 million times?
The news media giant, The Onion, has skillfully crafted the new parody website called ClickHole which is believed to be aimed at Buzzfeed and Upworthy (often publishing popular topics). A visit to the website www.clickhole.com prominently displays a step-by-step guide to clicking with matching illustrations.
"Coming this summer: an all-new internet experience filled with content so shareable, snackable, and clickable, it will rob you of all logic and reason. Until then, use the guide below to learn the proper method of clicking," stated the ClickHole placeholder.
In an article from Mashable, ClickHole Managing Editor Ben Berkley stated that the comedic vision of ClickHole is to bring about click-baiting content and the general internet culture in a satirical manner just like the 25 years legacy of The Onion.
He stated, "We don't want to primarily target any specific websites; we want a site with absurdist yet biting commentary that can adapt along with the ever-changing internet and take down whatever the most vapid viral content at the time may be. All while preying on the feeble masses and loading our pockets with their money, of course."
Scheduled to launch this June, the standalone website showcases quizzes, heartening personal tales in list form, charm factor, and slideshows all of which are placed alongside with sponsored posts in a barely distinct manner.
For instance, there is a quiz presented by Pizza Hut which asked: "Which pizza should I have for dinner tonight?" The personal tale reads: "Seven pricks that defied the odds and didn't go into finance." There is also a cute video of a kid entitled "What this adorable little girl says will melt your heart" which explains how brands uses cute kids for their advertising campaigns. There is also a photo slideshow called "Six Kinds of Hay" with no accompanying captions.
Jack Links Beef Jerky, a regular Onion advertiser and Carmichael Lynch, Mr. Jerky's creative agency will be sponsors for the ClickHole.
Meanwhile, those who wanted to explore whether the ClickHole is indeed satirical or real has to complete the click, click click at the click counter before the June launch.
