Before the prestigious international awards, the sold-out concerts and the chart-topping songs, Lorde was just known as Ella Yelich-O’Connor, and she sang in an indie rock band. An audio of her singing with the band called And They Were Masked has been unearthed online.

The band has enlisted Lorde’s help in recording two tracks from their album “Characters,” namely, “Piece of Mind” and “Sands of John,” around 2011/2012.

The tracks from the album, including those featuring Lorde’s vocals, are available for download for at least NZ$1 on the band’s Web site.

Although the songs appeared to have just recently hit online, thanks to the fan site Lorde Daily, they were actually brought to attention in March 2013 by the site hillydilly.

By that time, Lorde’s fame was still faceless as she was still on her upward trajectory of fame.

As she told the Web site, And They Were Masked was the band of her friend who asked her to sing for them while she was unoccupied.

This isn’t the first time a video or audio from pre-fame Lorde has been uploaded online.

In November 2013, a video of the now-17-year-old Grammy Award winner and her band Extreme was posted on YouTube.

Lorde, who was just 12 years old then, was with six other kids from Belmont Intermediate School to compete for the covers category of the Intermediate Schools Battle of the Bands Finals in 2009.

Extreme placed third in the competition.
