Samsung Galaxy S5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini: Price and Specs Comparison in Australia

South Korean multinational company Samsung is set to launch a compact version of Samsung Galaxy S5 with the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini. The smart phone will be available in Russia in early July with global availability yet to be announced. So how does Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini fare with the bigger version Samsung Galaxy S5?

Price

The price of Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is way low compared with the bigger version Samsung Galaxy S5. According to CNET, Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini costs onlt $420 while Samsung Galaxy S5 is priced at $1,350 for the $30 plan at Vodafone according to Whistleout.com. With ths price, smart phone users can already buy three units of Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini for the price of one Samsung Galaxy S5 unit. 

Physical Appearance

According to ZDNet, the Galaxy S5 Mini has the same look and feel of the Samsung Galaxy S5 in a more compact version. It is also available in black, white, blue, and copper gold colors and has maintained the perforated back plate, similar to a golf ball.

Display

Since it is a smaller version, Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has a smaller display than Samsung Galaxy. According to CNET, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has 4.5-inch super AMOLED screen with a slightly lower screen resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. While on Samsung Web site, Samsung Galaxy S5 has a 5.1-inch super AMOLED screen with high quality screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Processors and OS

In terms of processors and operating systems, both Samsung Galaxy S5 and Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini have Qualcomm quad-core processors with a slight difference in its clock. Samsung Galaxy S5 is clocked at 2.5GHz while Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is clocked at 1.4GHz.

Both smart phones also run on Android KitKat operating systems with Samsung Galaxy S5 running on version 4.4.2 while the Galaxy S5 Mini runs on version 4.4.

Camera

When it comes to camera, Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has only half the specs compared with the bigger version. According to Samsung Web site, Samsung Galaxy S5 has 16-megapixel rear facing camera and 2-megapixel front facing camera. On the other hand, ZDNet mentioned that Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini only has eight-megapixel rear-facing camera and 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera.

Memory

According to CNET, Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. The bigger version Samsung Galaxy S5 has a slightly better memory with 2 GB of RAM and either 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage. The memory of both units can be expanded through the microSD card slot.

Other Specs

Both Samsung Galaxy S5 and Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini have dust-resistant and water-resistant capabilities. Both gadgets also have fingerprint scanner, heart-rate monitor and inter-operability with Samsung's wearable devices such as Gear Fit. They are also preloaded with Google apps like Google Hangouts, Google Chrome, Google Play and others.
