The Nexus 6 release date this 2014 slips back anew into the Android world consciousness as an image of the device hit Twitter, thanks mostly to an accidental Google leak.

The picture tweet, however, is hardly an accident, CNET said in a report. Rather it is a deliberate Google move that aims to promote the Internet search giant's upcoming I/O Developers Conference on June 24 and 25.

The same report added that Google has this habit of 'leaking' what appears as yet to release devices that eventually turn out as old gadgets. Recent examples are the supposed Nexus 8 picture that actually was the Nexus 7.

The same tablet appeared again in a promotional splash of the Android maker but eagle-eyed Google watchers exposed the slate as really the first Nexus 10 in portrait mode.

The new Nexus 6 pic is a mock up (viewable here), which means that its tall, wide and all-screen profile as depicted in the image is not so certain of making the final cut in the event the device is released, said the CNET report.

The tech site, however, remains convinced that the Nexus 5 replacement is in the works despite recent insinuations that Google has opted to prematurely retire its Nexus devices and axe the Nexus 6 launch this year.

This move will pave the way for the company's Android Silver project that according to numerous reports will produce high-end smartphones and tablets worthy of tackling the bestselling Android-based devices of Samsung and the iOS gadgets from Apple.

Regardless, there will be two more native Android-run devices to come out in the second half of 2014 and one of which is the 8.9-inch Nexus 8 that analysts said will hit the market between July and August 2014.

Then the Nexus 6 will follow and the likely debut time for the kit is around fall this year or late September, CNET said.

Anticipated as a step up from the 2013 version, this year's Nexus smartphone is said to rely on a Qualcomm Snapdragon powerhouse chip that will match the 64-bit mobile computing capability of the A8 CPU that will power the iPhone 6.

On its September 2014 release date, the Google Nexus 6 will stand on Android 4.5 that is set for unveiling at the San Francisco I/O gathering later this June.
