French Open 2014 Day 3 Recap and Photos: Li Na Falls, Murray and Ferrer Advance

First round action of the 2014 French Open continued play Tuesday as some seeded players suffered upsets in the third day of the clay court grand slam in Paris, France. None bigger than the one in the women’s draw

The biggest name to fall was in the women’s singles as Li Na of China got to boot courtesy of an unheralded home country bet in Kristina Mladenovic who via three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.

Ranked 103rd in the world, Mladenovic played tough in winning the first set (7-5) and pulled off the major upset by a one-sided third set (6-1) over the second seed.

"I just tried to believe in myself and working really hard every day just to achieve and believe where she is and try one day to be up there," Mladenovic said via the French Open official website. “I had to be really calm and take my chances and being mentally strong ... it was such a nice feeling to have such a big win here in front of my crowd."

Meanwhile, in the men’s draw David Ferrer of Spain and Andy Murray of Great Britain took care of their opening day business to advance to the next round.

The fifth-seeded Spaniard beat the Netherlands’ Igor Sijsling via straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 in just over one and a half hours. The seventh-seeded Murray took the longer route winning in four sets, 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 over Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan.

Other seeded players to fall on this day are Bulgaria’s Gregor Dimitrov (No. 11) to Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic; and Spain’s Nicolas Almagro (No. 21) to USA’s Jack Sock.
