Mumbai Indians, desperate for a win, finally came up trumps with the bat to hand the Kings XI Punjab their first loss of IPL 2014 in a thrilling contest at the Wankhede Stadium.

The Kings XI Punjab put the pressure on MI by posting a big total of 168 for five in their 20 overs, with Glenn Maxwell and Wriddhiman Saha playing good hands.

However, it was to be MI's day in front of their home crowd, with the batsmen taking their side to 170 for five in 19.1 overs for a handsome five-wicket win.

The first win of IPL 2014 will come as a big boost for the Mumbai Indians, who were staring at a real possibility of seeing their chances of making the Playoffs before the tournament had even warmed up.

The chase was not hunky dory right from the start, with Ben Dunk and Ambati Rayudu falling early, but CM Gautam and Rohit Sharma combined well to calm the initial nerves, before the MI finishers took over nicely towards the end.

First, Corey Anderson took up the mantle, scoring at a searing rate to bring down the required run rate, before Kieron Pollard took over wonderfully well towards the end to smoke the bowlers into oblivion, the West Indian particularly severe on Mitchell Johnson, who went for 20 runs in the penultimate over of the innings, and take his side home, much to the delight of the Mumbai crowd.
