St George's Day remembers and pays respect to St George, who is England's patron saint. The anniversary of his death falls on 23 April and is observed as England's national day.

The curious legand of England puts it that St George was a soldier in the Roman army, who killed a dragon and saved a princess. An interesting thing about this day is that many people in England don't even know when their national day is. It was only recently that the day seemed to have gained some popularity.

The most widely recognised symbol of St George's Day is St George's Cross, a red cross on a white background, which is present in England's national flag, forming part of the Union Jack, the national flag of the United Kingdom or Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Here is a collection of the top 10 funny quotes about England to remember some light and interesting sides of this country:

  1.  "England with all thy faults, I love thee still - My country! and, while yet a nook is left Where English minds and manners may be found, Shall be constrained to love thee." - William Cowper
  2. "The English are not very spiritual people, so they invented cricket to give them some idea of eternity." - George Bernard Shaw
  3. "The English nation is never so great as in adversity." - Benjamin Disraeli
  4. "England has always been disinclined to accept human nature." - E.M. Forster
  5. "England is a nation of shopkeepers." - Napoleon Bonaparte
  6. "England is profoundly bizarre place that has produced thousands of bands that world has worshipped." - Gene Simmons
  7. "So, Blair keep your England, and let me keep my Zimbabwe." - Robert Mugabe
  8. "Ping-pong was invented on the dining tables of England in the 19th century, and it was called Wiff-Waff! And there, I think, you have the difference between us and the rest of the world. Other nations, the French, looked at a dining table and saw an opportunity to have dinner; we looked at it and saw an opportunity to play Wiff-waff."-Boris Johnson
  9. "England and America are two countries separated by the same language." - George Bernard Shaw
  10. "In a few years there will be only five kings in the world: the King of England and the four kings in a pack of cards." - King Farouk
