When Samsung Gear was first released, it was paired with Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The two devices complemented each other quite well.

But this time, with the introduction of Samsung's new Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit, and the very positive reception of fans to the Samsung Galaxy S5, the list of compatible items that go with new Gear and Fit wearable devices has already been released.

Phone Arena managed to have the list, containing 12 handsets and eight tablets, making a grand total of 20 handsets compatible with the wearables:

  • Samsung Galaxy S5
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 3
  • Samsung Galaxy S4
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Active
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom
  • Samsung Galaxy Note II
  • Samsung Galaxy S3
  • Samsung Galaxy Grand 2
  • Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3
  • Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8
  • Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 edition)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0

Gear 2's OS is Tizen, while Gear Fit is a real-time OS instead of the Android OS that runs the Samsung smartphones.

More Tizen And Android to Come From Samsung

Apparently, Samsung is bent on experimenting on Tizen OS to see how it will fare in the crowded market. It seems the second quarter of 2014 will see the release of Tizen-based smartphones from Samsung. The first will be a high-end device while a mid-range offering will follow sometime after.

CNet reported this may be Samsung's way of exploring its options with the Tizen. Even though the Android is pretty much a dominant power in the OS industry, its licensing from Google does put limits on Samsung, which may be the reason for experimenting with Tizen.

But this does not mean Samsung is gradually weaning out its Android-based devices. Digital Trends has spotted a report featuring Yoon Han-kii, senior VP of Samsung's product strategy team, talking about another smartwatch coming from the Korean company later this year. This time, it will have the Android Wear.

This is a pretty smart and diverse move as Samsung continues to churn out different devices which have the same function. The difference is that consumers have the option to choose what OS they want to use and Samsung can evaluate which one has the best reception.

The new Android Wear may also be Samsung's answer to HTC, LG, Motorola and Asus Android Wear hardware.
