Sony Xperia Android 4.4.2 Guide: Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra

Sony has been rolling out the Android 4.4.2 recently. The update will be available for a range of variants including the  Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra. As mentioned, the devices received the update through build number 14.3.A.0.681. Sony has announced previously that the Xperia Z range models will get the Android 4.4 treatment around the second quarter of 2014.

Among the changes that people can see when updating is the transparent components of the operating system. The Android 4.4.2 KitKat update will make the status bar transparent including the app tray located at the bottom. The KitKat operating system also takes away the frames surrounding the apps unlike in the Jelly Bean firmware. 

The latest KitKat system also only needs a basic swipe for the user to access it. Google removed the "blind effect" animation from the previous Jelly Bean OS. People may have to do a factory reset of their devices to update. It is best to have backup for all information stored. 

The Sony Xperia Z1 comes with the following specs: 

  • TFT capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
  • 1080 x 1920 pixels, 5.0 inches (~441 ppi pixel density)
  • Android OS, v4.2 (Jelly Bean), v4.3, upgradable to v4.4.2 (KitKat)
  • Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800
  • Quad-core 2.2 GHz Krait 400
  • Adreno 330

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact comes with the following: 

  • IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
  • 720 x 1280 pixels, 4.3 inches (~342 ppi pixel density)
  • Android OS, v4.3 (Jelly Bean), upgradable to v4.4.2 (KitKat)
  • Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800
  • Quad-core 2.2 GHz Krait 400
  • Adreno 330

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra features the following: 

  • Capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
  • 1080 x 1920 pixels, 6.4 inches (~344 ppi pixel density)
  • Android OS, v4.2 (Jelly Bean), upgradable to v4.4.2 (KitKat)
  • Qualcomm MSM8274 or MSM8974 Snapdragon 800
  • Quad-core 2.2 GHz Krait 400
  • Adreno 330
