Apple Wants Thinner iPhones, iPhone 6 to Feature Split Cameras and Location-Based Security

The Apple iPhone 6 appears more interesting by the day. The tech giant has been acquiring a number of patents over the past few weeks all hinting at some iPhone 6 features. According to recent information, it may be possible for Apple to create a thinner iPhone. Current patent sighting suggest that Apple wants to use split cameras for a thinner design. This may also come with a location-based security for better overall user experience.

According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the patent goes by "Electronic device with two image sensors." This explains the use of a camera consisting of two separate sensors. The first sensor will take and gather brightness or luma data whereas the other sensor will capture color or chroma information. The resulting image will be the combination of the data gathered by both sensors. 

Apple can create a thinner iPhone by splitting the camera. If the cameras are separated into two modules, the resulting component should be slimmer compared to the dual-purpose sensors used previously. This also allows Apple to create a thinner housing instead of the usual protective case.

Likewise, the tech giant also discussed that using a split design will allow enhanced signal-to-noise ratio leading to better image quality. This can also avoid color reproduction problems because of optical filters. Apple also indicated that putting together the entire module might be more cost effective than the previous method. 

The patent credits Michael F. Culbert and Chris Ligtenberg for the device. The patent goes by U.S. Patent Application No. 13/331543. 

Another patent application sighted goes by "Electronic devices having adaptive security profiles and methods for selecting the same." This describes a scenario featuring a mobile device that can control specific security protocols based on the location of the device. The smartphone can enable or disable automatically some security features depending on the environment. For instance, the device may allow the user to just input a four-digit passcode when inside the home. However, it will require a fingerprint for more verification when outside. This should safeguard people more from phone and information theft. 

Apple has yet to make an announcement about the iPhone 6.
