The Taiwanese smartphone maker pulled the wraps-off the much awaited flagship handset HTC One M8 in New York City and London on 25 March..

The new HTC One has inherited the award winning zero-gap metallic uni-body design language as well as the UltraPixel camera technology from its predecessor and comes loaded with more metal, faster CPU and an additional third snapper to compliment the main camera for in-depth focus.

Apart from its rival Samsung, Sony too is emerging to be a dark horse among the top smartphone makers in 2014. Japanese company's recently unveiled flagship device, Xperia Z2 can fight HTC One M8 neck-to-neck with strong build quality and a top-of -the-line camera specifications.

To give a clear perspective on the devices, we compiled a list of stand-out features between these two smartphones.

Here is Brief Comparison of HTC One M8 and Sony Xperia Z2:

Design and Display:

Sony's 2014 marquee phone Xperia Z2's body design is quite-similar to its predecessor, but on closer observation, it has a slimmer body with a little bump in the display size.

It sports an aluminum rim with 8.2 mm thick edge and features standard IP55/57 water and dust-proof certifications, which enables the user to take the phone for a dip in the swimming pool.

(Note: It can survive five feet under water for close to 30 minutes and all the ports of the phone must be closed with special lid provided in the package)

In terms of display resolution, Xperia Z2 flaunts a full HD (1920x1080p) IPS LCD screen with 424 ppi (pixels per inch) resolution and also boasts Sony's proprietary TRILUMINOS and X-Reality for mobile picture engine technology

On the other hand, HTC One M8 is no less of competitor; it boasts a well-crafted all-metal (90 percent, to be precise) uni-body. It is aesthetically bigger and curvier than its award winning predecessor.

The new HTC One smartphone boasts 5.0-inch Super LCD 3 display with full HD resolution having pixel density of 440 ppi.

Processor, RAM and Storage:

In this department, Sony and HTC smartphones stand even as they both house a same Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 series based SoC (System on Chip).

Sony Xperia Z2 ships with 3GB RAM, 16GB/32GB inbuilt storage with microSD card slot which can be expandable up to 64GB, whereas HTC One M8 houses 2GB RAM, 16GB/32GB memory, but ships with more storage capacity, expandable up to 128GB.

[It is to be noted that in some select markets in Asia, HTC One M8 will be released with 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 series quad-core CPU, chipset: MSM8974AC]

Mobile Operating System and Interface:

In this aspect, HTC and Sony smartphones again stand even as both the devices run on same Android OS platform (v4.4 KitKat), but come with custom UI of their own on top of the primary operating system software.

Sony phone ships with custom Xperia Themes, whereas HTC phone houses Sense v6.0 with some new Gallery and camera based applications Zoe album.

Camera:

Like its predecessors, Xperia Z2 too comes with the top-of-the-line camera features. It boasts of Sony's exclusive patented G Lens and the intelligent BIONZ image-processing engine, Exmor RS sensor which are usually found in expensive DSLR camera.

It also features LED flash, HDR (picture/video), image stabilizer and is capable of recording 4K Ultra HD video recording (twice the vertical and horizontal resolution of 1080p full HD format).

On the other hand, HTC, despite getting panned for its UltraPixel camera technology in its 2013 flagship model, has went ahead with the same features, but has incorporated additional camera on the top of the main camera module to extract more in-depth information of the scene, so that the user can re-focus multiple objects in the photo.

The main camera houses a 2-UltraPixel (equivalent to 4.0-megapixel) main camera backed by dual-color LED flash (True Tone), 1/3'' sensor size, 2µm pixel size, HTC ImageChip 2, automatic simultaneous video and image recording, geo-tagging, face and smile detection, HDR, panorama and a 5.0-megapixel wide-angle front camera with BSI sensors, full HD video recording and HDR features.

Both Sony and HTC phones ship with pretty decent front camera capable of snapping good quality 'Selfies' and full HD 1080p video recording.
