The biggest winners of the explosive El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona was probably Atletico Madrid, who took full advantage of Real's slip-up to jump to the top of the La Liga.

So, in theory, if Atletico win every one of their remaining nine games, then they could be looking at lifting that La Liga title.

Atletico currently lead the table from Real, who are level on points but trail due to an inferior head-to-head record. Barcelona could possibly be two points clear at the top when Atletico take to the field at the Vicente Calderon against Granada, with the defending champions hosting Celta Vigo in the early game.

"We only aspire to be competitive in each match," said Atletico manager Diego Simeone, looking to play down his team's chances of beating Real and Barca to the title. "At this end of season, all the players are essential.

"We have to look for the best alternatives to play each match, which are three days apart. I have faith in all the guys that have trained and are waiting for their opportunity. When I deem it necessary to make them play, I won't hesitate. We need them and they have been long expecting it.

"There is still a long way to go. Real Madrid and Barcelona are very liable to win, 27 is a lot of points. To always win is hard, and to compete against them you always have to win. We think we have a fighting chance, on match to match."

Atletico Madrid picked up a hard-fought away victory over bottom club Real Betis on Sunday, and Simeone expects another tough encounter against Granada, who find themselves in 11th with 34 points from 29 matches and are coming off a 1-0 home win over Elche.

"Tomorrow, the match against Granada will be hard and complicated because of the rival's necessities, since the three points on play are as important to them as for us," Simeone said on Tuesday.

"They work with a 4-3-3, they play well a stopped ball and have a good attack on the sidelines. We need to play intensely and direct the game to where it suits us."
