"The Vampire Diaries" Season 5 returns with Episode 16 title "While You Were Sleeping" filled with revelations on what Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) has been doing in the past three weeks as her evil doppelganger Katherine took over her body and life. The episode also have Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) admitting a terrible mistake that he did to Elena, the issue on doppelgangers, the Travellers and the arrival of new villain Markos.

Spoiler Alert: This feature contains major spoilers on "The Vampire Diaries" Season 5, Episode 16 "While You Were Sleeping." Elena Gilbert returns in this episode drinking and partying but the scene was only a hallucination as an effect of the enhanced "Ripper" virus injected in her body.

Stefan (Paul Wesley) told Elena that she has been sealed inside the campus because they have a lot of catching up to do particularly with her current condition. As for the other Ripper vampire, Damon has Jeremy (Steven R McQueen) and Matt (Zach Roerig) babysitting for him.

The trio had an argument because of Damon's behaviour. Jeremy and Matt taunted Damon for killing Aaron Whitmore (Shaun Sipos) because it will make Elena really upset but the Ripper vampire assured he will be the one to tell his lady love what he did to her friend.

Damon and Elena share a sweet moment over the phone as they talked about what happened when Katherine broke them up and how will they get cured. While Caroline (Candice Accola) is busy looking for the antidote, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) showed up to tell the blonde vampire that he has it.

However, Enzo wants Caroline to bring Stefan over first before handing the antidote that will rid of Damon and Elena's Ripper virus. Caroline asked Stefan to meet them at a location in order to get the cure and his appearance will have something to do with the Travellers' interest on doppelgangers.

Liv (Penelope Mitchell) started to brag about succeeding in sealing Elena with a spell at the campus but former witch Bonnie (Kat Graham) was not impressed. The Anchor to the Other Side asked the newbie witch to perform a simple fire spell but Liv failed so Bonnie criticized that her witch resume still needs a little padding.

Elena continues to have hallucinations like her relationship with Stefan and Damon as well as her friendship with Aaron. Stefan and Caroline arrive at the location where Enzo, Sloan (Caitlin McHugh) and the rest of the Travellers showed up to accomplish their plan.

Sloan revealed that they need to find another one of Stefan and kill him because they only need one doppelganger. Enzo further teased that it has something to do with the arrival of their leader Markos and his interest with the doppelganger pairing of Elena and Stefan.

Back at the campus, Elena continues to suffer the effects of the Ripper virus particularly with her hallucination on Aaron making her think she killed her friend. New gay character Luke (Chris Brochu) enters the picture to help Elena after she compelled him to call Bonnie and witch Liv to break the spell so she can get out.

Damon, who failed in calming down a hysterical Elena, threatened to hurt Matt if Jeremy does not free him from being chained up in the Salvatore mansion in order to find Elena and save her. Bonnie and Liv found Elena destroying her things that Katherine touched.

Bonnie tried to reason with Elena that letting the seal go down will be dangerous for her and her behaviour is what Katherine wants. However, Elena still wanted to break free from the spell so she hurt Liv in order to get what she wants.

The Travellers managed to locate Stefan's doppelganger, a rescue team member, in Atlanta. They wanted to deepen the linking spell in order to kill the doppelganger but Caroline stopped it because it's hurting Stefan and offered help in finding the doppelganger and kill him.

Damon found Elena wandering and hallucinating about Aaron. When Elena kept on insisting that she killed Aaron, Damon decided it is the perfect time to tell her what he did when he thought she broke up with him. Enzo finally shows up to give Damon and Elena the antidote that will get rid of the "Ripper" virus.

Liv survived Elena's attack and started to ask Bonnie to teach her more witch spells but it turns out the newbie witch is already a pro and she is the sister of gay character Luke. What are these two new characters up to against Elena and Bonnie?

Damon and Elena get in another fight as they talked about their relationship not working. "This has to end," Damon stated and Elena agreed by declaring that they are over but the two ended up having breakup sex.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 5 returns with Episode 17 titled "Rescue Me" on Thursday night, March 27, at 8 pm ET on the CW Network.
