If you always wanted to know who the most famous Canadians are, here comes a list from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. An online research paper by MIT takes a detailed look at the Canadian history and finds out who the most famous people are from the country.

Avril Lavigne

MIT's scientific research reveals that Avril Lavigne is the most famous Canadian ever even though the rock singer who was born in Ontario is yet to find a place in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. CBC News reported that not a single album among the top 10 est-selling ones was by Lavigne either. The most famous Canadian in the history does not have a Grammy in her kitty yet unlike her fellow Canadian musicians such as Leonard Cohen and Neil Young. Believe it or not, Lavigne still manages to be one of the most famous musicians from all over the globe ever.

The research was conducted on an interactive Web site named Pantheon. People who lived between 4,000 B.C. and 2010 were considered for the research. Additionally, another filter happens to be an entry to Wikipedia in 25 or more languages. Eventually, MIT came up with 121 names in the list of the most famous Canadians. The next person in the list just after Lavigne is Jim Carrey. Carrey, even though a highly famous actor of his time, has not won any Oscars yet. Justin Bieber comes third in the list.

The Canadian list comprises of politicians like Pierre Trudeau and Stephen Harper, athletes like Terry Fox and Wayne Gretzky, writers like Leonard Cohen and Margaret Atwood; and porn stars like Shyla Stylez and Sunny Leone.
