A side in rampaging form against a team struggling to keep pace with the top four - so a typical Manchester United vs Liverpool clash in the English Premier League era then... well, just about. Only difference this time around is the fact that the rampaging side are Liverpool and the strugglers - Manchester United.

"I think it's the biggest game in the Premier League," the under-fire United manager David Moyes said. "There has been great history between the two clubs over a long period. Every game of football is important and any game that features United and Liverpool is massively important.

"[Winning on Sunday] would be a big boost. It would be an important three points. We've played them twice this year and they've been tight games.

"Their league position suggests they're ahead of us and they possibly do come here as favourites. Liverpool are having a very good season. They're our next game at home and we have to do all we possibly can to beat them. We've got big games coming up this month so it will be important."

United find themselves 11 points behind third-placed Liverpool, who have ridden the form of their two strikers - Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, the two top scorers in the Premier League - to stay well in contention for the title.

"Suarez, for me, is up there with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the best players in the world," Rooney told MUTV. "He has been that good and the two of them [Suarez and Sturridge] together have been in great form this season. We will have to do everything we can to stop them on Sunday.

"I think they are both fantastic players and obviously it is good to see Sturridge doing well because he has never really had a chance at his previous clubs."

While Liverpool's forward men are firing on all cylinders, the same cannot be said about United's duo of Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie. Much was expected from the superstar partnership at the beginning of the season, but injuries and a seeming lack of understanding between the two have put paid to those hopes, leaving Moyes a stranded man.

"I think we are doing alright. Obviously, we can do better and if we are not at the top of the league then that will get looked at and we understand that," Wayne explained. "Personally, we can score more goals and we know we can. We are working hard to do that, we have to keep going and hopefully that will come."

Liverpool picked up a 1-0 win over United in the reverse fixture at Anfield in September, but it was United that triumphed over their rivals at Old Trafford in the third round of the League Cup on Suarez's return from a 10-match ban later that month.

Brendan Rodgers will be confident of doing a league double on United, though, and with it ending any hopes of the reigning Premier League champions clawing their way back to a Champions League position.

"We are 11 points clear now, and if it goes to 14, they can't do it," the Liverpool manager said. "Even 11 is going to be very tough because we are entering into a period where we are stronger. Our last 10 games last season, we were brilliant and we have been doing the same pattern this year.

"It is tough for any of the teams, you are always looking at yourself and making sure you perform. Over 14 months we've shown that we have been on the up. The first job is to consolidate fourth, then work upwards. That will be the aim."
