Tottenham will look to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to Chelsea in the English Premier League, when they host Benfica in the Europa League last 16 first leg.

Spurs manager Tim Sherwood criticised his players heavily after a 4-0 defeat to Chelsea at the weekend, after silly mistakes and loss of concentration cost them a possibly positive result.

Midfielder Sandro admitted Tottenham had been sub-par at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but fully expects the North London side to show more quality against last season's finalists Benfica.

"After a match like this [against Chelsea] we were all upset with what happened on the pitch and I think we have to put in some more effort than we did," the Brazilian said. "The manager said we need to show more character. Maybe it is that. We have this big game against Benfica, where we can show that we are better than that."

Clearing the air in a long meeting between the players has helped matters, according to Sandro. "We spent more than two hours in a meeting amongst the players and we said what we had to say," he added. "From now on, we know that we all have to listen when anyone says something. It was after the manager's conference with the press.

"We had a meeting with the players. Sometimes one player got a bit more stressed out and we tried to calm him down and talk in a nice way. We spent about two hours that way. Every player had their fair share to say, put it that way. We all spoke amongst ourselves.

"For me, to be honest, it helped a lot because now I can go and tell another player, and another player can tell me. The manager likes it. Everyone can go for it now, and I think it will help. I think that is positive from ourselves and we have to show in the next match that we can do much better. And we will prove that. I am sure we will show much more character in the next matches."

Benfica, on the other hand, are running away with the Portuguese league title, holding a comfortable seven-point lead over second-placed Sporting Lisbon, and are unbeaten since early November, when they went down to Olympiakos in the Champions League.

Jorge Jesus' side have experience in playing in Europe, and that will no doubt stand them in good stead against Tottenham, who have played some of their best football this season in the Europa League.

"Benfica have a lot of responsibility when it comes to this kind of match," Jesus said. "Both teams will play [to win] and we have to be responsible. I don't know what the Tottenham manager has said to his players. Success is always important. Benfica are a very significant club and have played in many important games in Europe."
