As Jose Mourinho refuses to consider Chelsea as the favourites, the Blues will be given yet another opportunity to put further daylight between themselves and the chasing pack when they entertain Tottenham in a London Derby of the English Premier League at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea find themselves in pole position, four points ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal, while six points separate them from Manchester City, who do have two games in hand.

"I am not top of the league, that is the problem," Mourinho said. "I am top of the league the day I have played the same number of matches as all the other teams and I have one more point than all the other teams.

"If that day arrives I can say I am top of the league, and we have six matches to play, or five or four, but until that moment, other teams have played less matches than us. They have matches in hand and they can win and they can be top of the league, which is the specific case with Man City. If they win the games they have in hand they are top of the league."

With none of the chasing pack, however, playing in the Premier League at the weekend, Chelsea can bulge that lead a little further courtesy a win over Spurs, who are desperate for three points themselves to stay in the reckoning for a Champions League place.

"We want to try to win and I believe they will do the same," Mourinho added. "We want our top-four position safe and, at the moment, the biggest threat is Tottenham because they are fifth, the closest team to the top four.

"If we can get a result against them we can say, almost for sure, our top-four objective is going in a very good direction. I don't remember in my previous years having an easy match against Tottenham, so it's a very difficult game.

"I just say we have to try to win the next match, it doesn't matter about the opponent, stadium or competition. Nothing is hidden, tomorrow we want to try to win the game, maybe we won't win but the objective is that we are going to try to win."

Tottenham haven't won at Stamford Bridge since 1990, and that will be a record that Spurs manager Tim Sherwood will want to right, with his team currently four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, who have played two games less, and six adrift of Arsenal and Liverpool.

"It's always a tough game but we can't worry about what has happened at the Bridge in the past, we have to be positive," said Sherwood, whose last away match in the Premier League did not go so well.

"We respect they have technically-gifted players and world-class players in certain areas and we have to stop them playing, then hopefully we can impose ourselves on them.

"Chelsea get the job done, they find a way to win and that has taken them to the top of the league at the moment. Jose Mourinho knows how to win. They have a lot of experience and they know how to get over the line.

"It was a blow to lose at Norwich because we want to win every game but to bounce back like we did against Dnipro and Cardiff, a potential banana skin, was fantastic. We'll now go there with no fear, we'll play with freedom and see what happens."

Team news: Chelsea: Ashley Cole picked up an injury in training and has been ruled out, while David Luiz also looks likely to miss out after picking up a knock on international duty with Brazil. Eden Hazard also suffered an injury with Belgium, but Mourinho expects the indispensable playmaker to feature against Spurs. Marco Van Ginkel has returned to training, but is not expected to be back in the first team for a while yet.

Tottenham: Christian Eriksen is a doubt with a back injury, but defenders Younes Kaboul and Kyle Walker are back in contention. Danny Rose (knee), Vlad Chiriches (back), Erik Lamela (back) and Etienne Capoue (ankle) remain sidelined.

Key men: Chelsea: Andre Schurrle grabbed a hat-trick in the 3-1 win over Fulham last weekend and the German international will be keen to continue the good form.

Tottenham: Emmanuel Adebayor has been the go-to man for Spurs under Sherwood, and the big striker will need to have another one of his inspirational games if the North London club are to come away with their first victory in 24 years.

Expected lineups: Chelsea: Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta, Ramires, Matic; Willian, Schurrle, Hazard; Eto'o.

Tottenham: Lloris; Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Fryers; Lennon, Paulinho, Dembele, Townsend; Adebayor, Soldado.

Prediction: 1-0 to Chelsea
