Hundreds of Justin Bieber fans, aka the Beliebers, were shocked by a prank trend on Twitter - #BABYWASDELETED. However, the news was hoax, created by fellow Beliebers, in order to make the song "Baby" the most watched on YouTube; a record currently held by Psy's "Gangnam Style".
Thousands of people were fooled into believing that Bieber's hit song was deleted from YouTube, as it neared a billion views. The hoax spread like wildfire. The hashtag #BABYWASDELETED went viral with over 3,000 plus tweets being sent out.
One of the tweets read: "#BABYWASDELETED GO WATCH FOR YOURSELVES IF YOU DIDN'T BELIEVE ME. IT STOPS AFTER 30 SECOND."
"Baby" was released as the lead single from Bieber's debut album "My World 2.0" in 2010. The track was written by Bieber with Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Terius "The-Dream" Nash, both of whom worked with Bieber on his debut song "One Time", and also by R&B singer Christina Milian and labelmate, rapper Ludacris.
In 12 July 2010, the video became the most viewed video in YouTube history, and remained on top till 24 November 2012, when it was surpassed by "Gangnam Style" by Psy. Since then, Bieber fans have been making several efforts to get back the record. The "Baby" currently has 991,444,216 views on YouTube.
However, "Baby" is still a long way away from "Gangnam Style". On 21 December, 2012, "Gangnam Style" became the first YouTube video to reach a billion views. At present, the song has about 1.9 billion views, and is slowly inching towards the two billion mark. It is certainly going to be a daunting task and would require Beliebers many more #BABYWASDELETED type tactics to get the song close to "Gangnam Style".
