Toyota's FCV Concept is inching closer to reality and the car which has been the talk of the town is all set to dazzle at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on 6 January.
The latest FCV which made its first appearance at the recently concluded 2013 Tokyo Motor Show is expected to go into production in 2015.The FCV; a hydrogen fuel-cell passenger vehicle from the renowned auto maker Toyota, will draw power from its fuel-cell stack and two 70 MPa high-pressure hydrogen tanks beneath the specially-crafted body. It will run on the compressed hydrogen power, which is a clear alternative to the usual gasoline-powered and plug-in cars, but the success of the hydrogen fuel-cell concept is still debated. In a world where the fossil fuel is running out, fuel-cell cars seem to be the only way.
Although Hydrogen vehicles have been in news for a while now and many companies have been considering the idea, the concept has been tantalizing because of the many hurdles. Now companies like Toyota, Hyundai and Honda could clear the stumbling blocks and introduce the all-new hydrogen cars into the auto world.
When Toyota FCV becomes a reality, the car will rival the Honda FCEV concept, which is also expected to mark its entry in 2015. But road to success is not straight and problems like supply of hydrogen still need to be addressed more seriously. The vehicle is also likely to boast a high price tag.
According to Automotive News report, Toyota hopes to sell between 5000 and 10,000 units of production version of the FCV in 2015.The car will be launched in Japan in 2015 and will head to US later in 2016.
"First we need to simplify the system, then share parts with combustion engines, reduce the use of precious metals and reduce the quantity of material used to build the tank," Tatsuaki Yokoyama, a general manager of Toyota's fuel cell system engineering division told Automotive News.
