'Frozen' Box Office Collection: Disney's Musical Beats 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' Last Weekend

Disney's animated musical, "Frozen" has beaten science fiction adventure film, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" at the December first weekend box office, making it to No. 1 spot on the chart.

According to a report by Entertainment Weekly, movies that broke records during Thanksgiving weekend dropped drastically last weekend. "Frozen" had a 53 percent fall to $31.6 million this weekend, overtaking the No.1 spot on the chart held by "The Hunger Games: Catching", which witnessed 64 percent fall to $27 million. The movies topping the chart in December first weekend are - "Frozen" ($31.6 million), "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" ($27.0 million), "Out of the Furnace" ($5.3 million), "Thor: The Dark World" ($4.7 million) and "Delivery Man" ($3.8 million).

"Frozen" has earned $134.3 million from 12 days and is expected to overtake its production cost of $150 million in a week's time and may go on to earn about $280 million if it goes at this pace, according to a report by Entertainment Weekly. "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" has collected $336.7 million from domestic box office ($673 million) in 17 days and is expected to cross $400 million mark.

Directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, "Frozen" is loose adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's book "The Snow Queen" and features the voices of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad and Santino Fontana. It was released on 27 November in the United States.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" directed by Francis Lawrence is a science fiction movie based on Suzanne Collins' novel, Catching Fire. It is the sequel to The Hunger Games and features Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks in the lead roles. It was released on 22 November in the United States.

According to Forbes, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and Disney's "Frozen" broke Thanksgiving box office records, scoring the biggest Thanksgiving weekend collection ($74.5 million Fri-Sat, $110.2 million Wed-Sun) and biggest Thanksgiving debut weekend ($66.7 million Fri-Sun, $93.3 million Wed-Sun) respectively. 

"Frozen" has broken the $80 million five-day Thanksgiving debut record of "Troy 2", and "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" broke the 12-year-old Thanksgiving box office records held by "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" which earned $82 million in the second weekend, said a report by forbes.
