Sony has proudly announced the sale of 2.1 million PlayStation 4 units around the world, since its November launch. The company had earlier announced that it had sold one million units of the next-generation console within 24 hours of its release.
This is a milestone for the company and it shared its good news on the official PlayStation Blog, as it competes with its arch-rival Microsoft's Xbox One. As the Holiday season approaches, there will be certain rush to buy the newest gaming consoles as retailers start offering discounts and offer deals to customers.
Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment called 2013 a historic year for gamers. "Now, with PlayStation 4's global launch expanding to a total of 32 countries worldwide, including Europe and Latin America, I'm proud to announce that more than 2.1 million PlayStation 4s have been sold," he said in a post on the PlayStation blog,
He added that this was "an impressive and record-setting accomplishment for our company and for our industry," and made it a point to thank fans for their "vote of confidence" on the product.
He said owners of the new console can expect new features to their devices in the coming years. "The best part: the PlayStation 4 journey has just begun. In addition to an incredible line-up of PlayStation 4 games from the best developers in the world, we will continue to introduce valuable new features and services to PlayStation 4 in the months and years ahead."
He also said that Sony was committed to bring the best in the industry and ensure high customer satisfaction. "While PlayStation 4's capabilities will continue to evolve, our commitment to gamers and breakthrough entertainment remains steadfast. We believe that videogames represent the pinnacle of artistry and entertainment, and we will work tirelessly to make sure that PlayStation remains the best place to play."
PlayStation 4 launched in North America on 15 November and in Europe on 29 November.
