The Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans were pegged to battle it out for top honors in the AFC South division. Going into their Week 9 match-up on Sunday primetime, it appears to be very one-sided as Andrew Luck and the Colts have been tearing up the division while Arian Foster and the Texans are looking to avoid their sixth loss in a row.
NFL: Denver Broncos at Indianapolis Colts
The Colts have won three of their last four games and none bigger than their upset win over the Denver Broncos in Week 7 before their bye week. Indianapolis beat Denver, 39-33 behind three touchdowns from Luck who had 228 passing yards on 21 of 38 completions.
While the Colts got the victory it was a costly one too as they lost Pro Bowl wide receiver Reggie Wayne to a sprained right knee in the fourth quarter and will miss the rest of the season. Wayne was the top Colts receiver through seven games with 503 yards.
The Colts enter the match-up with 5 wins against 2 losses while the Texans, last season’s AFC South division champions, are three games back at 2-5.
“The road to winning the division goes through Houston. They’ve won it the last two years. We’ve got to go down there and play very, very well,” Colts head coach Chuck Pagano told the Colts’ official website.
“Right now, our total focus is on Houston. We know that in order to give ourselves a chance to win the division, we’ve got to beat them.”
Meanwhile, the Texans are the best in the league in containing the aerial attack of opponents limiting them to just 145.6 passing yards per game but they struggle on ground giving up 122.1 rushing yards per game (28th in the NFL). They have to stop the Colts' running game which is 10th in the league producing 127.7 rushing yards per game.
“I think every week’s do or die. It’s no different. This is the position we’re in. We all understand that. We’ve got to make up some ground. The best way to make up ground in this league is when you’re playing your division, to play well,” said Texans head coach Gary Kubiak in Friday’s practice in the Texans’ official website.
“I’ve been in this situation where you’ve got to get it going.”
In their current five-game losing streak, three were blowouts-- losing to the Baltimore Ravens (30-9); San Francisco 49ers (34-3) and St. Louis Rams (38-13)-- and two were close games-- against the Seattle Seahawks (23-20 OT) and Kansas City Chiefs (17-16).
