The 2013 World Series has officially turned into a game of swings.
No, we’re not just referring to the red-hot bats of both teams, although that would be an apt description. We’re referring to how the series lead and the momentum that goes with it, has swung from the Boston Red Sox to the St. Louis Cardinals and back, and how a dramatic two-game winning streak by the Red Sox away from home has successfully brought the series back to Beantown.
MLB: World Series-Boston Red Sox at St. Louis Cardinals
The script was simple at first. The Red Sox won 9-0 at home. Seeking to redeem themselves from humiliation, the Cardinals won Game 2 in Boston and Game 3 back in Busch Stadium, wresting the lead away from the Red Sox. Just when everyone thought the momentum had really shifted Midwest, the boys from New England then put together a masterful performance in Game 4, tying the series at two games apiece.
With the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright and the Red Sox’s Jon Lester reprising their roles in Game 1, it was expected that the former will make up for his previous, less-than-stellar performance. However, it was more of the same for Wainwright, giving up one run in the first inning courtesy of David Ortiz. Matt Holliday would then give Lester his first blemish of the series in the fourth inning, but that was all St. Louis could muster, as a pair of RBI singles in the seventh inning dealt Wainwright his second straight World Series loss.
The series will shift back to Boston’s Fenway Park, where a sellout crowd will cheer on the Red Sox as they try to complete a journey that started in 2012, when they were one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball. Michael Wacha and John Lackey will pitch again for the Cardinals and Red Sox, with Wacha hoping for a repeat of his Game 2 performance and Lackey wanting to get lucky en route to his first World Series title since 2002, when he was still with the Anaheim Angels.
