An Instagram war has erupted between the reported suitor of Miss Universe Philippines Ariella Arida and DJ Mo Twister, a Filipino disc jockey and radio talk show host. The root of their word war is Ariella's response to a question in an ANC interview over her lack of communication skills.
This is the show that triggered the word war:
The portion which deals with the alleged communication deficiency of the Filipina beauty queen, said to be one of the top contenders for the Miss Universe 2013 title, is on the 6th minute of the video clip.
What got the goat of DJ Mo, Mohan Gumatay in real life, is her comment that she should not be criticised for her lack of English communication skills because Latina beauties can't even speak one sentence in English, yet many of them have won the Miss Universe crown.
The controversial DJ wrote in his Instagram account (djmotwister), quoted by Pep.ph, "I don't intend to bash on our Ms Philippines here but how the f__k is this not considered offensive toward Latinas?"
He pointed that Filipinos are sensitive when the race or country is bashed, citing previous instances involving author Dan Brown and actor Alec Baldwin, yet Ariella is doing the same by speaking that way about Latinas.
"I am pretty sure we would lose out minds if we heard an interview of a contestant saying 'Filipinos can't string a sentence together' and our Senator/Congressman would persona non grata that bitch immediately," DJ Mo pointed out.
A few hours after her interview, Ariella apologised for her comments when she realised some people reacted negatively to what she said. In her Twitter account (@araarida) she tweeted, "OM sorry. I didn't mean to offend anyone from my last interview. I hope you guys can understand what Im trying to say."
However, basketball player, actor and reportedly the suitor of Ariella, Ervic Vijandre, shot back at DJ Mo through his Instagram account (ervic_vijandre) by posting a screenshot of DJ Mo's comment and captioning it: "Shut the f**k up! #LittleLadyBoy."
Ervic's next post in Pilipino was: "His peg is a gay person! I think he wants to be a beauty queen. But he lacks height teh! #littleladyboy." Teh is a gay lingo term for Ate, a title of respect given to the eldest sister.
Mo shot back, "Teh?"
Additional exchanges were made between the two men touching on the not-so intelligent reputation of basketball players and Vijandre's loss in the recent local election as candidate for councilor in Taguig City.
The word war has veered away from Ariella's English-speaking skills, or lack of it, as the verbal battle ended in Vijandre posting a photo of DJ Mo in tears, poking fun at his crying 13-minute video. The image was taken from a scandal a few years ago involving Mo who was aghast over his girlfriend's abortion that resulted in the death of the fetus. The video, seen below, became viral since the girlfriend is Filipina actress Rhian Ramos.
While the word war has transcended into a personal insult session, it would be recalled that in the ANC interview, Ariella admitted there were some calls for her to get an interpreter, but she rejected the suggestion, insisting she can deliver.
The suggestions were perhaps based on Filipina beauty queens shaming themselves in international or local beauty pageants because of their poor English-speaking ability.
It would be recalled that Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up Venus Raj was a crowd favourite until she opened her mouth and fumbled on her answer, resulting in her not getting the coveted crown and her "major, major" response become a buzz word in the Philippines.
Then there was also the dethroned Miss Philippines World 2008 Janina San Miguel and her notorious Q&A.
Yet, one Filipina beauty queen who is known for mangling the English language, became Miss International 1979. Here is her Q&A in the Miss Philippines 1979 pageant.
