This year's nomination list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame features 8 first-time nominees including Peter Gabriel, The Replacements and others. From grunge to rap, the nomination list has a healthy mix of genres. Cleveland's Rock Hall announced the list on Wednesday.
Grunge gurus Nirvana made it onto the list in their first year of eligibility. Nominees for the rock honour must have recorded singles or albums in 1988 or earlier to be eligible.
The trio from Aberdeen, Nirvana, formed in 1987 and had fallen vocalist and guitarist Kurt Cobain, drummer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic. Nirvana released their first single "Love Buzz" a cover of Shocking Blue in late 1988, hence they are eligible.
More than 600 voters will decide who will be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2014. The inductees will be announced this coming December and a ceremony will take place next April in New York.
Ronstadt received her first nomination; recently, she shared the news of her Parkinson's disease. Morevoer, fans have questioned her absence from the list in the past. Rush, the prog rock wonders, finally made it in the induction earlier this year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Other nominees are KISS, N.W.A., Deep Purple, The Meters, Chic, The Butterfield Blues Band, LL Cool J, YES, The Zombies, and Hall and Oates.
Greg Harris, Rock Hall President and CEO told The Plain Dealer that it is remarkable to have so many first-time nominees in 2014. He also praised the fact that the list features diverse types of bands.
Like last year, fans are allowed to vote for their favourite bands or artists. This is the second year the Rock Hall has allowed fans to select along with music experts. The five artists with most votes will be inducted at a ceremony in April 2014.
