The Miami Hurricans, currently ranked #10 in the Associated Press Poll, visit Chapel Hill to do battle with the North Carolina Tar Heels in an Atlantic Coast Conference game.
Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, NC, will be the venue of Thursday's football game between the Miami Hurricanes and the UNC Tarheels.
The Tar Heels and Hurricanes cannot be too far apart. North Carolina is known for its basketball program, perennially considered among the top 10 in the nation, while Miami is known as the ACC's football school. Miami is currently 5-0, with wins over the likes of #12 Florida and a 45-30 rout of Georgia Tech. In contrast, North Carolina, at 1-4, is on a three-game losing streak, succumbing to the likes of Georgia Tech, East Carolina and Virginia Tech.
Expectations have been less than stellar for Miami this season in the wake of the 2011 Shapiro scandal. However, it doesn't seem to have affected the Hurricanes, as Miami has scored an average of 45.2 with a winning margin of 29.2, keeping their opponents to a measly 16 points per game, one of the lowest in the Football Bowl Subdivision. In contrast, North Carolina's offense is one of the worst in the nation, scoring only a maximum of 31 points, a 24-point home loss to Eastern Carolina.
Miami is led by one of the top quarterbacks in the NCAA, senior Stephen Morris, who set an ACC record for single-game passing yards with 566 in 2012. North Carolina's most prominent player, offensive tackle James Hurst, was part of the 2011 All-ACC 2nd Team. Both teams play contrasting styles, with the Tar Heels preferring a ground-based game and Miami playing a passing game.
North Carolina is coming up with a unique way to fire up its fans: new black uniforms patterned after the Tar Heel logo. They are expected to follow up on the success of their 2012 "white-out" game against Virginia Tech, which they won 48-34.
With a 1-4 record and a tough ACC schedule coming up, the Tar Heels are not likely to figure in the college football postseason for the second straight year. The Hurricanes are projected to contend for one of the major college bowls for the first time since 2010, when they were routed by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Sun Bowl.
