Ellen DeGeneres just loves Lorde. The U.S. talk show host has been impressed by the teen singer from New Zealand after she performed on “The Ellen Show” on Thursday.
“Our guest is only 16 years old and has the number one song in the country. When I was 16 my best friend was a blanket named Tammy,” the comedienne introduced the chart-topping performer.
"Royals" Singer, Lorde
Lorde then sang her hit “Royals,” which is currently atop the Billboard Hot 100 for the second consecutive week.
Although the Kiwi songstress appeared nervous, or as some viewers described, “awkward,” Lorde was still able to deliver an impressive, soulful performance.
“@LordeMusic was incredible,” Ellen captioned the photo.
“Royals” has been breaking records since it has captured international audience. It has topped the Billboard Alternative Chart 17 years after a female soloist’s song took the place. Tracy Bonham was the last female solo act to top the chart with “Mother Mother” in 1996.
But while people are raving about Lorde’s hit, one U.S. blogger wasn’t impressed, calling “Royals” “racist.”
Feministing writer Veronica Bayetti Flores claimed that the Kiwi “white girl” was criticising “black folks” and the rap culture in general when she mentioned “Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece” on her song’s lyrics.
“While I love a good critique of wealth accumulation and inequity, this song is not one; in fact, it is deeply racist. Because we all know who she’s thinking when we’re talking gold teeth, Cristal, and Maybachs,” Flores wrote.
The article has sparked contentious debate on racism since it was published in early October, with Lorde’s supporters and other music listeners defending the singer, alleging that the writer was critiquing the song through an American’s viewpoint.
