Manchester United are considering a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, according to reports in the British press.
Manchester United are looking at a January bid for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.
Gundogan had a splendid season last year for Dortmund, as he starred for the German club on their way to the UEFA Champions League final.
His form caught the attention of several big clubs, including the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.
With Arsenal having snapped up German Mesut Ozil, their interest in another big-money signing for a midfielder has cooled down, opening the way for Manchester United.
David Moyes is still looking for a midfielder who can run the game for him, Michael Carrick not really having a great start to the season - nothing like last year at least - and Marouane Fellaini yet to convince, although there have been signs of improvement.
Fellaini was bought from Everton on transfer deadline day for £27.5 million, but Moyes is still in the market for a midfielder and the Scot has reportedly turned his attentions towards Gundogan.
The 22-year-old's current Dortmund contract expires in 2015 and talks over a new deal have reportedly stalled.
Gundogan is currently out of the team with an injury which could keep him out until January, and said he is going to stay mum over reports concerning the signing of a new deal with the German giants.
"I am not going to make statements on the contents of those talks," he is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.
"Everyone has to be patient about it, just like I have to be patient in terms of my current injury."
Moyes is reportedly ready to spend some cash on the £30 million-rated midfielder, but it remains to be seen if Dortmund will be willing to sell in January, or even next summer.
Gundogan will certainly add the calmness and guile which United have lacked this season. His passing range is brilliant and is also capable of making a few runs up the field, although he does prefer playing the deep-lying midfielder's role.
There is little doubt that Gundogan will add quality to United's squad and if Moyes can pull off a deal, then it would be considered quite a coup.
