It’s the final four in the men’s singles competition of the 2013 China Open as top seeds Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal take on separate opponents Saturday. Both are chasing all-important points that could very well decide who gains the number one spot in the ATP rankings.
Djokovic currently has the slight edge versus Nadal with 11,120 points against 10,860. The 260-point difference can be seized by the Spaniard by end of this tournament in Beijing, China, which offers 500 points to the champion and 300 points to the runner-up.
Both players posted contrasting wins Friday to advance to the semifinals. Nadal struggled early and lost the first set, 2-6 against Italian Fabio Fognini but turned it up a notch in the next two sets, 6-4, 6-1. Meanwhile Djokovic dominated American Sam Querrey from the get-go and won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Tomas Berdych, who won over John Isner, 7-5, 6-2; and Richard Gasquet, who upset David Ferrer, 6-3, 6-4 in the other quarterfinals matches complete the final four cast.
Berdych is paired with Nadal while Gasquet draws with Djokovic in the semis.
Djokovic has won the last three titles in Beijing.
