Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has revealed that he feared losing the Reds star striker Luis Suarez all throughout the summer.
The Uruguayan international had made his desire to leave Anfield and was subjected to multiple bids from the Reds' Premier League rivals, Arsenal. However, Liverpool hierarchy were quick to reject the Gunners' offer as Brendan Rodgers was keen on retaining Suarez.
The former Ajax served a 10 match ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic and featured in his first league game during Liverpool's 3-1 win over Sunderland. Suarez scored twice during their victory over the Black Cats while his strike partner Daniel Sturridge netted the other goal.
"Every day in the summer [I feared losing Suarez]," Gerrard said, adding "When you have a player as good as Luis Suarez, you know the big clubs are going to want him. I was waking up each morning, hoping that nothing would happen and that he would still be here."
"It is a credit to Luis for the way he has come back. A lot of players in his position might have come back and spat the dummy out and not tried for the team. But he is not that type of guy. He realised the club wanted to keep him and he has respected their decision."
The 26-year-old striker was forced to continue with Rodgers' side after the club rejected his request to leave Anfield. However, the South American has urged to do his best to help the club, after returning to action from suspension.
The England international admitted that he tried harder to persuade Suarez to continue with the Merseyside club.
"Nobody tried harder than me to [make him stay] and he knows exactly what I think of him. I knew if we could keep him here, the better our chances would be. He is a special type of footballer and he gives us something different," Liverpool legend stressed.
"When the club got the message to him that they were not going to sell, he got his head down and has worked hard. He has never given us a moment's problem. He wants to achieve something this season and he looks as hungry as he has ever done. He is here now and he wants to stay."
