Former Manchester United defender David May claims that David Moyes' side needs to stick together after suffering a worst start to their season in the Premier League era.
The former Everton manager replaced Sir Alex Ferguson after the latter stepped down from his post at the end of last season. United have won two out of the six games in the league, with two successive defeats against Manchester City away and West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford.
United sit 12th in the Premier League table with seven points from six league games and are eight points behind league leaders Arsenal. May, who was the integral part of Ferguson's treble winning team in 1999, believes it is up to the senior players in the squad to help the club bounce back.
"Teams are ahead of us now, Arsenal are eight points ahead and you cannot give the competing teams these points in hand. But you have to bear with it. We've got a team of champions who know how to win things and they need to stick together and turn it around," May told talkSPORT.
"They've got big players at United. Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick, all these players have got vast experience of being in this position, and it's up to those lads to pull the rest of the team through."
The Premier League champions had put in bids for Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas, Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira and Gareth Bale, who completed his world record move to join the nine-time European champions from Tottenham Hotspur.
United had a poor summer transfer, having managed to add Marouane Fellaini to the squad on the deadline day of the transfer window. May claims that the Old Trafford club are in need of reinforcements and Moyes needs to bring in new faces in January.
"David Moyes might be saying something to the owners now. We went for Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara and Gareth Bale this summer, but they didn't happen," the former United defender stressed.
"Their summer dealings sent out the wrong message for fans, but we need to stick together and see it out to the New Year and hopefully get in a couple of players in the winter."
