Infielder Manny Machado of the Baltimore Orioles suffered a severe injury on Monday during their road game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Machado took an awkward step with the outside of his leg foot on the edge of the first base while running a single. His leg got twisted inward and he collapsed in pain. Machado was taken out of the field on a stretcher. Machado went through an MRI early Tuesday; initial results indicate that he sustained no torn ligaments.
The Baltimore Orioles' Manny Machado slumps to the ground following a freak leg accident that will likely sideline him for at least six weeks.
While Tampa Bay won, 5-4, their elation was muted with the gruesome injury suffered by their opponent.
"You know that your guys have that vibe going on. It's a good feeling," Rays manager Joe Maddon told USA Today. "[But] It's horrible. That guy there, to me ... Hate to see that. This is a young man, a tremendous talent. You can see the effort level with them."
Machado was not the only fallen Oriole in Monday's game. In the eight inning, with the Orioles trailing 2-4, second baseman Alex Casilla dove for the catch but hit his head against Nick Markakis, who was also racing for the ball. The collision hurt the Orioles in more ways than one as the ball dropped and the Rays capitalised on the error for two runs.
"He kind of looked dazed and confused. I thought about doing a slide, saw him out of the corner of my eye, tried to pull up and get out of the way. It was just bang bang, him coming full speed, me coming full speed," Markakis said of the accident.
Casilla, who felt groggy between the eighth and ninth innings, stayed in the game, but Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he will be going through a CT scan to eliminate the possibility of a concussion. The second baseman will not travel to the Orioles' next game and will stay overnight in Tampa instead.
The loss puts Baltimore six games behind Tampa Bay in the race for the AL wild card. The Orioles are also five games behind the second-running Cleveland Indians and have lost six straight games that have all but derailed their wild card aspirations. The loss of the 2013 All-Star will mean that the team loses a lot of its offensive sock as Machado will probably be out for six to eight weeks.
